We are Gayle and John, a couple from England in search of larks. At the moment we're travelling on bikes - a habit we picked up in 2010 after meeting a host of half-crazed and dust-covered cycle tourers of all shapes, sizes and smells. When we're not cycling we are usually working to save money and planning the next journey. We are, like most Europeans, very lucky to be able to quit our jobs and travel to lots of different countries and we continue to meet the most wonderful and friendly people. So we're not thinking of doing anything else just yet.......
John's interest in travelling began with Tintin. Gayle's began with jigsaw maps. Our first journeys together were to India and then Mexico and Guatemala. We realised that we were only scratching the surface of these countries and needed more time to explore, so in 2001 we bought one-way tickets to South America, quit our jobs and set off with backpacks. We were quite slow at getting around the continent and were nicknamed The Sloths by John's dad. Our next long backpacking trip was along the Silk Road beginning in 2007. This journey lasted 3 and a half years and ended with us buying bicycles in Bangkok and cycling to China and then along the Karakoram Highway from Kashgar to Islamabad. We were hooked.
Our next ride from Norway to Japan and Korea beginning in 2012 was indirect and very rewarding emotionally, if not financially. In 2015 we spent a year in Viet Nam teaching english. Our english has never been the same since.
You can read about our earlier journeys by going to the links in the right margin of this blog. Our year in Viet Nam remains untold.
Gayle takes fabulous photographs and posts them on Flickr - and you can link to them from the Photos tab at the top. John tries to think up witty captions and how to describe the journeys in brief but interesting vignettes using the 'dramatic' present tense. If only his memory was reliable.....
